Songbird, Tepin Star at Record-Breaking November Sale

The stars aligned for a record-breaking sale Monday night at Fasig-Tipton, led by the sales of multiple champions Songbird and Tepin, and featuring two million-dollar weanlings.

Two-time champion filly and nine-time Grade 1 winner Songbird topped the sale when sold for $9,500,000 midway through the evening. Offered as Hip 120 by Taylor Made Sales Agency, the four-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro was purchased by Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm. Songbird is the second most expensive broodmare prospect sold at auction; the most expensive was Havre de Grace, purchased for $10,000,000 at this sale in 2012, also to Pope.

“We had a remarkable catalogue and we had remarkable results tonight,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning.

Also popular was two-time champion turf female Tepin, who fetched a price of $8,000,000. Offered as Hip 130 by ELiTE, Tepin was purchased in foal to Curlin by Coolmore’s M.V. Magnier. Tepin is the second most expensive broodmare sold at this auction.

A pair of weanling fillies tied for a new sale record early in the evening when sold for $1,000,000 each.

The first through the ring was Hip 21, a daughter of Street Sense who is a full sister to Grade 1 winner Callback. That filly was purchased by Reynolds Bell, agent for Alpha Delta from the consignment of Paramount Sales, agent. The second was Hip 46, a filly from the first crop of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. That filly, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Bodemeister, was purchased by Narvick International from the consignment of Eaton Sales.

“The buzz in the pavilion tonight and in the back walking ring was just exceptional,” added Browning. “We were fortunate enough to have a great deal of quality on offer tonight. All in all, we’re just ecstatic.”

Overall, 19 horses sold for $1,000,000 or more, up from 15 in 2016. The gross was $74,200,000, a new record for The November Sale, up 37% from last year. The average was $645,217, up 4.9% from 2016, while the $250,000 median tied for second best at this sale all time. The RNA rate was 18.4%.

Hip 196 Quidura (GB) ($3,600,000)

196webHip 196, Grade 2 winner Quidura (GB) sold for $3,600,000 at The November Sale. The Dubawi filly was purchased as a racing/broodmare prospect by White Birch Farm from the consignment of Brookdale Sales, agent.

A winner at two in Germany, Quidura arrived in North America at three, where she won the Valley View S. (G3). This year at four she picked up the Canadian S. (G2) and was twice G1 placed. Quidura was campaigned by owner Gestuet Faehrhof and Graham Motion, for whom she earned $503,788.

Quidura is a half-sister to Group 3 winners Querari and Quasillo, from the immediate family of One Thousand Guineas (G2) victress Quebrada (IRE).

Hip 188 Illuminant ($1,100,000)

188web.jpgHip 188, Grade 1 winner Illuminant sold for $1,100,000 at The November Sale. Offered as a racing/broodmare prospect, the Quality Road mare was purchased by Shadai Farm from the consignment of Bluewater Sales, agent.

A winner at three, Illuminant captured the Gamely S. (G1) at four and the Monrovia S. (G2) and Wishing Well S. at five. She earned $536,243 for owners Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Head of Plains Partners, and SF Racing and trainer Michael McCarthy.

Illuminant is out of the multiple stakes winning Polish Numbers mare Sparkling Number. She is from the immediate family of multiple graded stakes winner Honey Fox.

 

Hip 181 Gomo i/f Medaglia d’Oro ($1,500,000)

181web.jpgHip 181, Grade 1 winner Gomo in foal to Medaglia d’Oro sold for $1,500,000 at The November Sale. The Uncle Mo mare was purchased by Bridlewood Farm from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

Gomo won the Alcibiades S. (G1) at two on the dirt and was stakes placed on the turf. She earned $349,130.  She was campaigned by owner Reddam Racing and trainer Doug O’Neill.

From the exceptional first crop of Uncle Mo, Gomo is carrying her first foal, a son or daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, who has seven individual Grade 1 winners in 2017.

 

Hip 171 Finest City ($1,500,000)

171web.jpgHip 171, Champion Finest City sold for $1,500,000 at The November Sale. The City Zip mare was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida from the consignment of Ian Kruljac, agent for Seltzer Thoroughbreds.

Champion sprinter in 2016, Finest City won the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) and Great Lady M S. (G2) that year. She placed in an addition four Grade 1 events on her way to earnings of $1,256,394. She was campaigned by owner Seltzer Thoroughbreds and trainer Ian Kruljac.

Finest City is from the immediate family of Grade 1 winners Burning Roma, Squander, and Goodbye Halo.

Hip 162 Dacita (CHI) ($1,850,000)

162web.jpgHip 162, Champion Dacita (CHI) sold for $1,850,000 at The November Sale. The Scat Daddy mare was purchased as a racing/broodmare prospect by Don Alberto Corporation from the consignment of Lane’s End, agent.

Dacita was a champion at two and three in her native Chile, where she captured three G1 contests. She added Grade 1 wins at four and five in the United States, including the Diana S. (G1) and Beverly D. S. (G1). She earned $1,398,369 and was campaigned in North America by Sheep Pond Partners and Bradley Thoroughbreds and trainer Chad Brown.

Crowley’s Law is a winner in England and in North America, capturing the River Memories S. and finishing second in the First Lady S. (G1) at four. She is from the immediate family of Group 1 winner Bushranger (IRE) and graded/group stakes winners Montekin, Mazaad, and Helen of Spain.

Crowley’s Law was campaigned by Rockingham Ranch and trainer Peter Miller. She earned $298,757.

 

Hip 160 Coasted ($1,300,000)

Coasted won the P. G. Johnson S. at Saratoga at two and was runner up in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1). She earned $366,066 for owner Treadway Racing Stable and trainer Leah Gyarmati.

Coasted is out of multiple Grade 2 winner Malibu Pier, by Malibu Moon, and is from the immediate family of Champion and Grade 1 winner Bannaby.

 

 

Hip 157 Catch a Glimpse ($3,000,000)

Catch a Glimpse was Sovereign Award Horse of the Year, Champion Grass Mare, and Champion Two-Year-Old Filly in Canada at two with wins in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) and the Natalama S. (G2). She was a multiple graded stakes winner at three, most notably winning the Belmont Oaks Invitational S. (G1) and the Penn Mile S. (G3) against males. She earned $1,853,615 for owners Gary Barber, Michael Ambler, and Windways Farm and trainer Mark Casse.

Catch a Glimpse is from the immediate family of Grade 1 winner High Yield and graded/group stakes winners High Yield and Medea (IRE).

Hip 142 American Story ($2,200,000)

American Story is the dam of two winners from as many to race: 2017 Test S. (G1) American Gal and Americanize, winner of the Damascus S. on the Breeders’ Cup undercard, both by Concord Point. She has a two-year-old and a yearling also by Concord Point and a weanling by Bayern.

American Story is a half sister to Grade 1 winning millionaire Reynaldothewizard and Grade 1 winner Seventh Street out of the stakes winning Meadowlake mare Holiday Runner.

Hip 136 Yahilwa i/f War Front ($1,100,000)

Winner of the Sixty Sails H. (G3), Yahilwa won four times and was twice G1-placed in her career. She earned $583,495 for owner D P Racing and trainer James Cassidy.

Yahilwa is from the family of graded stakes winners Houston, Elaborate, Aryoutalkintome, Crowd Pleaser, and Ubiquity.

 

Hip 130 Tepin i/f Curlin ($8,000,000)

130bHip 130, multiple Champion Tepin in foal to two-time Horse of the Year Curlin sold for $8,000,000 at The November Sale. The exceptional mare was purchased by MV Magnier from the consignment of ELiTE, agent for Robert Masterson.

Tepin was Eclipse Champion Turf Female at four and five. At four, she won three Grade 1’s, capping off her season with a win over males in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1). At five, she won G1’s in three countries last year at five, capturing the Queen Anne S. (G1) at Royal Ascot, Woodbine Mile (G1) in Canada, and Jenny Wiley S. (G1) in the U.S.

Tepin was campaigned by owner Robert Masterson and trainer Mark Casse, for whom she earned $4,437,918.

Hip 123 Stays in Vegas i/f Curlin ($1,450,000)

Stays in Vegas captured the Senorita S. (G3) on the turf at three and won five times in her career on the way to earnings of $419,279 for owners Jungle Racing, KMN Racing, and LNJ Foxwoods and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Stays in Vegas is from the immediate family of Champion Heavenly Prize and Grade 1 winners Persistently and Good Reward.

Hip 120 Songbird ($9,500,000)

hip120b.jpgHip 120, the incomparable multiple Champion Songbird sold for $9,500,000 at The November Sale. Offered as a broodmare prospect, the Medaglia d’Oro filly was purchased by Whisper Hill Farm from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for Fox Hill Farm.

Campaigned by Rick Porter’s Fox Hill Farm and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, Songbird was a nine-time Grade 1 winner and Eclipse Champion at two and three. She won 13 of 15 starts and earned $4,692,0000, racing almost exclusively in graded stakes winning company.

Hip 102 Nickname ($3,000,000)

102web.jpgHip 102, Grade 1 winner Nickname sold for $3,000,000 at The November Sale. Scat Daddy’s only Grade 1 winner on dirt, Nickname was purchased by Kerri Radcliffe Bloodstock from the consignment of Claiborne Farm, agent.

Nickname won the Frizette S. (G1) at two and earned $557,710 in her career. She is from the immediate family of CashCall Futurity (G1) winner Comma to the Top.

Nickname was campaigned by owner LNJ Foxwoods and trainer Richard Mandella.

 

 

Hip 99 Miss Temple City ($2,500,000)

Miss Temple City is a three-time Grade 1 winner with earnings of $1,677,868 lifetime. She captured the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) and Maker’s 46 Mile (G1), both against males, before shipping to California to win the Matriarch S. (G1) against distaffers.

Miss Temple City was campaigned by owners The Racing Club, Needle in a Haystack, and Sagamore Farm and trainer Graham Motion.

Hip 96 Mesa Fresca i/f War Front ($2,000,000)

Mesa Fresca is the dam of Grade 1 winner Harmonize, by Scat Daddy, who won the Del Mar Oaks (G1), as well as the Jessamine S. (G3) in course record time, and Glens Falls S. (G3). Harmonize earned $827,860.

Winner of the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) at three, Land Over Sea was three times Grade 1 placed, at two and three, and earned $746,500. She is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner War Story, from the immediate family of Champions Green Forest and Epitome.

Land Over Sea was campaigned by owner Reddam Racing and trainer Doug O’Neill.

Hip 72 f. Medaglia d’Oro – Glittering Tax ($650,000)

The immediate family includes champions Art Nouveau, La Galerie (ARG), and Gernika (ARG), as well as Grade/Group 1 winners Goustache (ARG), Apeles, and Arte Pop.

Breeders’ Cup Connections Catalogued at Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Billed as the World’s Premier Breeding Stock Event, Fasig-Tipton’s November Sale features 25 fillies, mares, and weanlings connected to this year’s Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

Among those catalogued are Filly & Mare Sprint contenders Skye Diamonds, Finest City, and Finley’sluckycharm; Filly & Mare Turf contenders Zipessa, Dacita, and Kitten’s Roar; and Juvenile Fillies contender Piedi Bianchi, as well as the dams, half-siblings, and close relatives of 18 other runners.

The November Sale will be held Monday, November 6 at 4 PM in Lexington, KY.

Fasig-Tipton has added an additional three supplemental entries to the catalogue for the 2017 November Sale to be held on Monday, November 6 in Lexington, Kentucky.  These new supplemental entries are catalogued as hips 199-201, and bring the total number of entries in the supplement to nine.  These latest entries are:

  • BROOKLYNSWAY (Hip 199): Grade 3 winner, Grade 2 placed runner is a six-time stakes winner of nearly $725,000. Winner of the Doubledogdare S. (G3) at Keeneland, where she defeated multiple G1 winner I’M A CHATTERBOX and multiple graded stakes winner AHH CHOCOLATE.  Her 23 career starts included stakes wins at two, three, and four.  Consigned as a broodmare prospect by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.
  • CHALON (Hip 200):Three-year-old graded stakes filly was a close second in her most recent start against older horses in Thoroughbred Club of America S.
