Led by a filly by the late Smart Strike, a trio of six-figure fillies topped the first session of the Midlantic Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale held Monday in Timonium, Maryland.
Hartley/de Renzo Thoroughbreds offered the session-topper, a Smart Strike filly catalogued as Hip 79. She was purchased for $525,000 by Xavier International Bloodstock. The chestnut filly worked an eighth in 10:0 during the final day of last week’s under tack show. Her dam, the stakes winner Salty Response, is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Salty Strike, herself by the sire of Hip 79.
Into Mischief, Leading Sire of Two-Year-Olds in 2016, sired the co-second priced offerings: Hip 34, offered by Wes Carter, agent for Carolyn Vogel, sold for $425,000 to Donato Lanni, agent for an undisclosed buyer; Hip 123 was purchased for the same price by Speedway Stables from the consignment of McKathan Bros., agent.
In total, 38 two-year-olds eclipsed the six-figure mark, including a trio of $300,000+ colts: Hip 195, a Blame half-brother to recent Grade 2 winner Arklow, which sold for $375,000 to Charles Boden Thoroughbreds, agent from the consignment of Crupi’s New Castle Farm; Hip 13, a Curlin colt from the Bobby Dodd consignment which caught the eye of Charles Zacney for $350,000; and Hip 262, a colt from the first crop of Orb which sold for $310,000 from the consignment of Niall Brennan Stables, agent for Jake Ballis, agent.
162 horses sold for a total of $11,537,500, compared to 157 sold for $10,715,700 during the first session in 2016. The average was $71,219, up 4.3% from $68,253 average in the first session last year, and the median of $40,000 was good for a 17.6% increase from last year’s first session median of $34,000.
