Spectacular Gulfstream Sale Posts Gains Across the Board

The Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale realized gains across the board during its successful third renewal on March 1 at Gulfstream Park. Led by a trio of seven-figure juveniles, the sale posted gains in gross, average, and median.

The top-priced offering of the evening was Hip 57, a daughter of Uncle Mo which sold for $1,500,000 to OXO Equine from the consignment of Cary Frommer, agent. Frommer purchased the filly for $250,000 at the Fasig-Tipton July Selected Yearling Sale. OXO Equine also signed for a $1,100,000 More Than Ready colt (Hip 156) offered by Frommer late in the sale. Frommer paid $235,000 for the colt last July.

The third seven-figure two-year-old was Hip 135, a speedy colt by Bernardini offered by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds, agent. Eaton Sales, agent for M.V. Magnier purchased the colt for $1,450,000. Hartley/De Renzo purchased the colt for $350,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale.

Overall, 74 juveniles sold for $25,115,000, up 16.3% from 66 sold for $21,590,000 in 2016. The $339,392 average was good for a 3.8% increase over last year’s average of $327,121, while the median rose 8.0% to $270,000 from $250,000 in 2016. The RNA rate was a historical sale low of 14.9%.

Hip 156 is out of the stakes winning War Front mare Tensas Punch. He hails from the immediate family of G1 winner Liaison.

Hip 148, a colt from the second crop of Bodemeister sold for $525,000 at The Gulfstream Sale. The dark bay or brown colt was purchased by Kindred Stables from the consignment of Niall Brennan Stables, agent. The colt worked an eighth in 10:3 during Monday’s under tack show (video).

Hip 148 is the second foal of the winning Congrats mare Stop the Wedding. Her first foal is a two-year-old winner of 2016. The colt hails from the immediate family of graded stakes winner Outta Tune.

Hip 144, a colt from the first crop of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Orb sold for $500,000 at The Gulfstream Sale. The bay colt was purchased by China Horse Club & WinStar Farm from the consignment of Wavertree Stables, agent. The colt worked an eighth in 10:2 during Monday’s under tack show (video).

Hip 144 is out of Spring Awakening, a G1-placed stakes-winning daughter of In Excess (IRE). Spring Awakening has produced three winners from as many foals to race, including the graded stakes winning Tapit filly Walk Close. This colt’s immediate family further includes G1 winners Hold That Tiger and Editor’s Note.
