A Curlin colt rocketed into the lead at the Midlantic Fall Yearling Sale late in the day on Tuesday when hammered down for $450,000 at the Fairgrounds in Timonium, MD. Cash Is King’s Charles Zacney purchased Hip 323, a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Awesome Flower out of a half-sister to Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Well Armed, from the consignment of Becky Davis, agent. The final price was good for second most expensive yearling ever purchased at the Midlantic Fall Sale.

Zacney had stretched to $290,000 earlier in the day to snag Hip 187, the 2016 renewal’s top-priced filly, a daughter of the record-setting young sire Uncle Mo. “I’ve been eyeing her all day,” Zacney told the TDN after jumping in late to place the winning bid on the filly. “I’m a closer.” The top filly was consigned by Darby Dan Farm, agent.

The sale showed significant improvement on the 2015 edition, perhaps bolstered by the success of Stellar Wind, Cathryn Sophia (who Zacney purchased at this sale in 2012), and Bradester, a trio of 2016 Grade 1 winners who went through the ring at this sale as yearlings.

Overall, 268 yearlings changed hands for a total of $6,436,600, a 23.1% increase over 2015. The average of $24,017 was good for a 25.9% increase over last year. The RNA rate of 17.0% represented a drop 8.3% from 25.3% in 2015. The median held steady at $10,000.
